I sorta-kinda got asked to draw this by the Ancient Land of Ys forum community, and sorta-kinda wanted to anyway after the release of some artwork from the upcoming Ys VII game.
IT'S HIDEOUS. >_< It was so god-awful I had to draw Adol just to console myself over how horrific they made him look. I don't even wanna go into the other characters... the ONLY good thing that came of that art was the fact that Adol finally (after what, twenty years? XD) gets a genuine costume change.
Oh, and they kept the scarf that he picked up in Felghana. Which is good, because I did love that scarf. It's so cute. ^.^<3
Oh dear god. I am SO glad I am not the only one who looked at the 2D illustrations in Ys 7 and went...*BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARF* Dogi made me bash walls. With my forehead to forget seeing him in that! D:
I haven't exactly sauntered over to ALoYs to voice that opinion(though most ALoYs people aren't too stuck up in their fan-twit-ism.)
If the gameplay is up to par for Ys, I might pick it up, but on the PSP, I have a hard time believing that. I'm not too happy with the mash-happy direction Ys has gone. Falcom's other stuff has been fun like Zwei 2, but Ys is on the road to MHEH.
I think a good chunk of the people over on ALoY are in agreement that the new "art" is amateurish and blecky. >_< I think Adol's looked his best in Ys I & II Complete, and in Oath in Felghana, personally.
They did wonky things with the new art they're shoving into the PSP ports for Ys II and II as well. O_O Why, oh why, would they replace Iwasaki-sensei's beautiful art? I mean, really?!
The gameplay of Ys 7 has me curious. It COULD work very nicely on the PSP, but it's starting to sound like it'll become a clone of all the other Action RPGs that have already created and mastered the formula long ago. (Tales series, Seiken Densetsu, yadda yadda.) I liked the way Felghana and Origin played. >_> Kinda was hoping they'd keep that engine in place for at least one more game...
Ah well. Can't always get what we want, I guess. I might draw the other characters in Ys 7 sometime, just so I can pretend those terribad designs DON'T exist.
The in-house artist(s) they had for Felghana and Iwasaki are really good! I'm kinda partial to the Ys6/YsO illustrator too. When a majority of the fan art from their fan art contests beats that Ys7 crap, they ought to be embarrassed.
I haven't seen the stuff for I-II Chronicles, but maybe they needed some new scenes and since Minako Iwasaki doesn't work for them anymore, they don't feel like paying her.
Felghana and Origin had their redeeming features(mainly the bosses,) I just saw trends I didn't like. Especially with Origin(I shut the music off in the tower which seems like something one should never EVER need to do in an Ys game!) Origin and Felghana are faster, but it feels at the expense of something else.
I don't know if you can reverse the nasty effects of Ys7dreckism. Redrawn bad is still...bad.
I'll bet 1000 yen they're putting their dev muscle into Eiyuu Densetsu 7 which is gonna have some ties to that 6-trilogy. I guess ED has been giving them the best sales bang for their dev buck.
And LOL my co-worker worked on the US port of Gurumin. I thought about working at Falcom now that I'm in Japan, but I think there are 3 things you should never see made: 1-Sausage 2-Laws 3-Your favorite games
